NYK develops new VSLFO fuel additive

NYK noted that fuel consumption and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions appear to improve when the new additive is used.

NYK and Nippon Yuka Kogyo, an NYK Group company, have been investigating the properties of VLSFO and in 2019 developed the sludge-dispersing fuel oil additive Yunic 800VLS. The additive suppresses the formation of sludge caused by asphaltene and paraffin (wax) from VLSFO due to poor compatibility when mixing or bunkering VLSFO (0.50% sulphur).

In three fuel consumption ratio reduction tests conducted with compliant fuel oils in Japan and overseas, the companies also observed fuel consumption reductions of up to 1.2% compared to when the additive was not used, and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were also reduced.
