New continuous SO₂/CO₂ analyser for regulatory exhaust monitoring applications

The MES 1002, which has been awarded Type Approval Certification by DNV, is set to revolutionise regulatory exhaust monitoring. 

The standalone unit does away with the need for on-board service, unlike the extractive analyzer systems that currently dominate the exhaust monitoring segment. Instead, the entire analyser unit is exchanged with a refurbished unit over two years. The exchange can be performed simply by crew members within an hour.  

This improves availability, ensuring compliance, while lowering the opex costs associated with the unit over its operational life. “The Danfoss IXA solution is simple. The shipowner orders a refurbished unit every 2 years and returns the existing unit for refurbishment. If no extraordinary damage has occurred during operation, this comes at a fixed price. The returned analyzer will be completely overhauled to as good as new standard and be ready for dispatch to the next ship that has decided to enter this service/exchange program with us” Claus Vogel, CEO at Danfoss IXA, explains.

The MES 1002 has been designed for marine applications, drawing on the operational experience of the MES 1001 NOx analyzer. Over 2000 units of the MES 1001 analyser, which was introduced in 2016, are in operation around the world as part of engine and SCR control. 

The design is also expected to eliminate concerns around ensuring that analyser specialists can conduct unscheduled maintainenance on units.

“With service ability in mind as well as the experience from our NOx analyzer, we have designed an analyser that shall be extremely robust, demonstrate long-term stability and upon which it will be easy to perform maintenance.” Thomine Stolberg Rohr, head of R&D says.

This included making provisions for vibration and other aggressive environments, including high ambient temperatures. By utilising the UV DOAS principle for SO2 we have managed to build an analyser that shows no drift. Also, the CO2 measurement utilises an equally long-term stable principle based on infrared DOAS. This has been awarded by DNV with a 24 month between calibration requests.
