Arkitech delivers HVAC savings for cruise
Arkitech’s software analyses data from more than 1,500 sensors installed on board the MSC Magnifica, boosting chiller efficiency by up to a reported 12%, saving around 1,600MW per year.
The HVAC system on board cruise ships and ferries is one of the largest power consumers after propulsion, making energy efficiency a priority.
“Controlling the most energy-demanding processes onboard – propulsion, hotel operations and HVAC – is increasingly important,” said Ivana Melillo, head of energy efficiency, MSC Cruise Management (UK).
“Thanks to the project, we expect to save 10 to 12 per cent of HVAC energy consumption, equating to nearly 1 tonne of fuel saved daily. The greatest emissions savings come from the fuel we don’t use.”
Arkitech’s solution can be installed during normal operations and works by continuously optimising the system’s temperature set points in response to varying conditions such as weather, seawater temperature, mobility, number of passengers, time of day and whether the vessel is at port or sea.
“The results achieved by our system onboard MSC Magnifica exceeded our expectations,” said Sander Huijer, chief executive of Arkitech.
“With more ships and product improvements in the pipeline, we look forward to further supporting MSC in reaching their sustainability goals.”
The MSC Magnifica project was delivered with the support of ABB Marine and Ports.
