World first rotor sails retrofit on a capesize bulk carrier
This project marks the first installation of rotor sails on a capesize bulk carrier, a vessel type known for its large size and energy consumption. MOL and Vale anticipate a substantial reduction in fuel consumption and GHG emissions of between 6% and 10% on the crucial Brazil to Far East trade route, further enhanced by voyage optimisation technology.
Aligned with its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” MOL is aiming to achieving net zero GHG emissions by 2050. The adoption of wind propulsion technology is a cornerstone of this strategy, as the company seeks to reduce its environmental impact while leading the industry towards decarbonisation.
Vale, a multinational mining and metals company, has its Ecoshipping program. This is focused on R&D and partners with shipowners, focusing on driving energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions across its fleet. Valemax and Guaibamax vessels, known for their efficiency, are examples of the company’s program in action.
By combining wind propulsion with advanced vessel design and operational optimisation, MOL and Vale are looking to become leaders in the development of low-emission shipping solutions.
