Schottel invests in cutting-edge thruster workshop in Colombia
Located strategically near the Caribbean Sea and key shipyards, the facility will be the first of its kind in Colombia by a propulsion system provider. The €5 million investment reflects Schottel’s commitment to enhancing its regional presence and service capabilities.
The new workshop aims to address a critical gap in propulsion system support across the LATAM region. Schottel CEO Stefan Kaul highlighted the importance of the project, citing its role in expanding on-site services and strengthening ties with customers. “This strategic move underscores our focus on LATAM’s potential and our dedication to proximity and customer support,” Kaul said, crediting the local team led by general manager Julio Carrasquilla for laying the groundwork for this expansion.
Carrasquilla emphasised the value the workshop will bring to customers. “By providing comprehensive after-sales services, we will improve fleet operational times and elevate customer support to new heights,” he explained. The facility’s location ensures rapid access to maintenance and repair services, benefiting operators across the region.
The workshop, set on a 4,700-square-metre site, will feature a 1,000-square-metre facility equipped with advanced technology. Operational from summer 2025, it will include dual overhead cranes with up to 60-tonne capacity, a 3D scanning system for precision part evaluation, and a machining area for turning, milling, and grinding. With vertical assembly capabilities of up to 12 metres in height and an auxiliary pivoting crane for added flexibility, the facility will be capable of handling multiple propulsion units simultaneously.
Additional features include a 100-square-metre spare parts warehouse, ergonomic assembly zones, and advanced oil traps. The 800-square-metre office building will house up to 37 employees, including a training room, and is designed for ergonomic and team-oriented workflows.
Sustainability is at the core of the project. The facility will operate with reduced energy consumption, resource conservation measures, and recycling standards. A rooftop photovoltaic system will generate 138 kW of energy annually, covering the building’s energy needs and contributing 60 kW of excess power to the public grid. This design minimises the CO2 footprint and aligns with Schottel’s broader environmental goals.
The new facility is scheduled to commence operations in July 2025, with the move bolstering the company’s presence in Latin America.
