Schottel wins Portuguese navy contract

The vessel, to be named NRP Dom João II, is being constructed by Damen Shipyards Group and has been developed to meet the navy’s specific operational requirements. The 107-metre-long and 20-metre-wide ship will be capable of deploying unmanned drones and helicopters, with a primary focus on oceanic research, search and rescue, emergency relief, and maritime safety operations.

For the main propulsion system, Schottel will supply two electrically powered EcoPeller type SRE 560 azimuth thrusters, each with an input power of 2,600 kW. The L-Drive variant, designed to reduce installation height and mechanical losses by eliminating the upper gearbox, contributes to increased efficiency. Manoeuvrability and dynamic positioning capabilities will be enhanced by a Schottel TransverseThruster type STT 3 FP with an output of 800 kW. This configuration will enable the vessel to achieve a free-sailing speed of 15.5 knots. Furthermore, the propulsion system has been engineered to meet DNV’s ‘Silent A’ class requirements, ensuring low underwater noise emissions at a light survey speed of 10 knots.

The Schottel EcoPeller combines powerful propeller thrust with lateral force to deliver optimal efficiency and steering performance. Its hydrodynamically optimised design ensures maximum steering forces, high course-keeping ability, and overall efficiency, making it well suited to the operational demands of the MPSS.

To further enhance environmental sustainability, the propulsion units will be equipped with Schottel’s LeaCon seal monitoring system, certified by DNV. This system prevents seawater contamination by lubrication oil through a design that collects both incoming seawater and escaping gear oil in an intermediate chamber. Additionally, it monitors the condition of the seals, allowing early detection of operational wear and reducing the risk of unscheduled maintenance.

Designed for both oceanic research and naval support operations, NRP Dom João II will feature laboratories and accommodation for scientific personnel. The ship’s capabilities will be further extended with a stern ramp for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), as well as a 94-metre by 11-metre flight deck and hangars for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Currently under construction at Damen Shipyards in Galați, Romania, the vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
