WinGD’s NOx abatement solution to enter commercial service

The technology, developed by the Swiss marine power specialist, has been tested at Mitsui E&S DU (MESDU) Co’s facility in Aioi, Japan, on three WinGD 5X52-S2.0 engines destined for bulk carriers under construction at a Japanese shipyard.

This milestone follows over two years of service experience with a prototype version. The latest iteration features reductions in material and production costs, an integrated heating unit to facilitate operation with heavy fuel oil, and design enhancements aimed at minimising ammonia slip.

Peter Krähenbühl, vice president product centre at WinGD, commented: “WinGD’s unique on-engine NOx abatement solution ensures IMO Tier III compliance while offering operators greater flexibility in engine room layout and vessel design. This latest development further reduces the cost impact of NOx abatement and enhances treatment efficiency across both conventional and emerging fuel types.”

The iSCR system reduces the footprint of off-engine equipment and simplifies piping requirements compared to both low- and high-pressure SCR units located off-engine. The integration of the NOx abatement system with the engine streamlines testing and commissioning, allowing both elements to be assessed together before installation. Additionally, optimised exhaust flow management and the utilisation of engine waste heat create favourable conditions for effective treatment.

Type approval testing took place on 16 January, with representatives from eight leading classification societies in attendance: ABS, BV, CCS, DNV, KR, LR, ClassNK and RINA.

WinGD’s iSCR technology is currently available as an option for its 52- and 62-bore engines, including short-stroke variants, compatible with fuel oil, ammonia, and methanol. Further extension to additional engine types will be evaluated based on market demand.
