ABB secures largest ever PM shaft generator order

The orders come from shipbuilders in China and South Korea to supply its permanent magnet shaft generator technology for a total of 30 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. Eighteen vessels will be built in China and twelve in South Korea, with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2030.

Designed to enhance operational efficiency by drawing power directly from the main engine, ABB’s permanent magnet shaft generator system offers superior fuel economy compared to conventional solutions that rely on auxiliary engines. By eliminating the need to start high-speed, fuel-intensive auxiliary engines during voyages, ship operators can achieve substantial fuel savings. The technology also delivers higher efficiency than induction or electrically excited synchronous machines across both full and partial load conditions.

ABB estimates that its permanent magnet shaft generator system can reduce fuel costs by up to four percent compared to traditional configurations. When integrated with ABB’s advanced ACS880 Converter and Control System, which optimises performance in hybrid applications, fuel efficiency gains can increase by an additional one percent.

The system’s simplified design and compact footprint offer further advantages. By removing the excitation unit within the converter and reducing the size of the permanent magnet shaft generator, the technology can achieve up to 20 percent savings in space and weight. This not only eases installation but also cuts maintenance costs. These benefits are particularly valuable for shipowners looking to strengthen their competitive edge while aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonisation objectives.
