Berg Propulsion retrofit boosts efficiency for Lighthouse

The vessel, Terneskjaer, an 81-metre, 2,900 dwt general cargo ship owned by Bio Feeder AS, underwent a comprehensive upgrade to enhance energy efficiency. The Torangsvåg-based fleet manager evaluated various options for optimising energy consumption aboard Terneskjaer, which was built in 2008. The aim was to reduce fuel costs, lower emissions, and provide the vessel with a competitive edge in the marketplace.

After a consultative process, Lighthouse selected a retrofit package from Berg Propulsion to convert Terneskjaer to a more efficient diesel-electric propulsion system. The upgrade included the installation of a new gearbox, two permanent magnet motors, and the incorporation of Berg’s MPC800 control technology. Additionally, the existing Berg propeller blades were optimised to meet the vessel’s new operational requirements, with the addition of a nozzle designed to improve thrust, particularly at lower speeds.

Lasse Øpstad, general manager at Lighthouse Ship Management, commented on the results: “A 33% reduction in fuel costs is highly significant and ensures a secure future for a vessel that has been a reliable performer in Norway’s demanding coastal sector for over 15 years. Ships like Terneskjaer, built and maintained to this level of quality, can easily meet lower carbon requirements and remain competitive for many years.”

In addition to the fuel savings, the retrofit project also led to a reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, making the project eligible for tax breaks under Norway’s NOx Fund. This initiative supports shipowners who contribute to the fund in exchange for financial incentives aimed at reducing emissions.

Magnus Thorén, sales manager – energy efficiency at Berg Propulsion, highlighted the multiple goals of the project: “There were several objectives, including enhanced performance, greater operational flexibility, reduced NOx emissions, decarbonisation, and extending the vessel’s operational life. However, energy efficiency was the primary focus. Our close collaboration with Lighthouse Ship Management ensured that we arrived at the best solution, and we are pleased that their trust in our technology has been fully justified.”
