A next generation module-based retrofit
The M/S Suomenlinna II, a 2004-built passenger ferry connecting Helsinki’s Market Square to the UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna sea fortress, was given a module-based retrofit, upgrading only the outdated components and preserving key infrastructure like cabinets and cables.
“ABB’s ability to provide a module-based retrofit as opposed to a full system replacement was a key factor for us in selecting a partner for this modernisation project,” said Petri Öhrmark, managing director of Suomenlinnan Liikenne Oy.
“Thanks to this upgrade, it can continue providing reliable, high-efficiency services to residents, as well as tourists visiting the heritage site, for years to come.”
Minimised disruption
The project reflects a growing trend in the marine industry to prioritise sustainable, cost-effective solutions like targeted engine retrofits over full-scale replacements.
With the retrofit, ABB installed its advanced ACS880LC drive, modernising the ferry’s propulsion system while minimising disruption to its operating schedule.
ABB emphasised that the vessel propulsion upgrade not only improves performance but also supports circularity by extending the vessel’s lifecycle.
Suomenlinna II, operated by Helsinki City Transport subsidiary Suomenlinnan Liikenne Oy, makes multiple daily crossings year-round, carrying up to 395 passengers.
With ABB’s ongoing service support, the passenger ferry is well-positioned to continue its critical role in Helsinki’s public transport network going forward.
