Kongsberg wins electric tug contract

The agreement covers four TRAnsverse tugs, with options for an additional four vessels, marking a significant step in Svitzer’s strategy to expand zero-emission harbour and terminal towage operations.

“With this order, Svitzer have made the bold statement that they see emission free operations are no longer in contradiction with vessel economics,” said Mark Callaway, senior sales manager – Tugs at Kongsberg Maritime.

“Our efficiency, state-of-the-art automation, and delivery capability are all differentiators that played a part in our selection.”

Kongsberg Maritime’s scope includes the complete electrical and automation architecture, incorporating DC and AC switchboards, propulsion motors and shore charging systems. Each vessel will be powered primarily by a 4.8MWh battery pack, supported by integrated control through the K-Chief system and K-Chief PMS, enabling streamlined ‘one-touch’ operational modes.

The tugs will be equipped with twin US L Drive azimuth thrusters featuring 2.8-metre nozzles and powered by 2,000kW permanent magnet motors. These systems, controlled via the AquaPilot platform, are designed to deliver high propulsion efficiency and precise manoeuvrability for demanding harbour operations.

Additional equipment will include hydraulic escort winches, capstans and chain stoppers to support high-performance towage, particularly in advanced escort scenarios requiring rapid response and control.
