Jotun and BW LPG ink hull cleaning deal

The contract, announced at Nor-Shipping in Norway, builds on the successful implementation of Jotun’s hull performance solutions on 17 BW LPG vessels since 2020.

“After a thorough evaluation of paint suppliers considering ESG criteria, delivery, fuel savings and price, Jotun’s solutions and logistics stood out,” explained Ricardo Ackermann, head of procurement at BW LPG, explained.

“Our experience with Jotun’s SeaQuantum X200 paint, which required minimal hull cleaning, greatly influenced our decision.”

As the maritime sector strives toward net-zero emissions by 2050, BW LPG is aligning its fleet with the IMO’s greenhouse gas targets by retrofitting LPG carriers with dual-fuel propulsion and exploring ammonia fuel technology.

Ackermann emphasised that ‘optimising hull performance offers an immediate and effective pathway to enhance efficiency and comply with regulations’.

BW Aries, the first vessel treated with Jotun’s HPS, showed no measurable speed loss over 56 months, achieving fuel savings of 3 to 5% and far exceeding performance guarantees.

The partnership also grants BW LPG access to Jotun’s HullKeeper platform, which uses an advanced fouling risk algorithm to notify when hull inspections are recommended, enabling proactive maintenance and enhanced operational efficiency.
