Stena RoRo rebuild boosts capacity

The reconstruction, led by Stena RoRo, adds a fourth cargo deck and boosts the Stena Foreteller’s capacity by 30%, increasing lane metres from 3,000 to 4,000 and improving operational efficiency while reducing CO₂ emissions per cargo unit.

“The rebuild of the Stena Foreteller is another step among many we are taking to reach our goal of reducing our CO₂ emissions by 30 per cent by 2030,” said Dennis Tetzlaff, chief operating officer fleet at Stena Line. “We are working on many fronts, where the improvement of existing vessels and the development of new ones are equally important.”

In addition to the new deck, the 23-year-old vessel has been fitted with shorepower connection capabilities, upgraded bow thrusters and new mooring winches. Other updates include preventive maintenance, system upgrades and a full repaint.

The Stena Forerunner, sister ship to Stena Foreteller, is set to undergo the same transformation later this summer.

“This is a typical Stena RoRo project,” said Mikael Abrahamsson, manager – Conversions & Projects. “Rebuilding vessels with a long history in a foreign country is always technically and culturally challenging, but we balance it with strong cooperation and experienced teams.”

Meanwhile, two new hybrid NewMax vessels – Stena Futura and Stena Connecta – are being finalised at the same shipyard and will enter service on the Belfast–Heysham route this autumn, further supporting Stena Line’s decarbonisation goals.
