Future-proofed powered ferries for Grimaldi

The propulsion packages will be installed on four vessels for Grimaldi Lines, three for Finnlines and two for Minoan Lines, all under construction at China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Weihai Shipyard.

“We will deliver future-proof solutions through engines capable of running on different fuels, along with cohesive packages of innovative, low emission technologies, to support the operational performance of these vessels today while enabling flexibility for the future.”

Future proof

Wärtsilä’s equipment is designed to improve operational efficiency while supporting the industry’s transition to alternative fuels through fuel-flexible, methanol ready technology.

All nine ferries will be powered by Wärtsilä’s 46F engines, which are designed to operate on sustainable fuels, including methanol, providing owners with greater flexibility as fuel availability and emissions regulations evolve.

The vessels will also be equipped with hybrid exhaust scrubber systems and transverse thrusters to enhance operational performance and regulatory compliance.

In addition, the three Finnlines ferries will also receive a hybrid electric propulsion package featuring gearboxes, controllable pitch propellers with shaft lines and Wärtsilä’s ProTouch remote propulsion control system.

The integrated solution is intended to increase propulsion efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions.

Equipment deliveries are scheduled between 2026 and 2028, extending the long-standing partnership between Wärtsilä and Grimaldi Group.
