K Line looks to VLCC fleet

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has decided to invest in new tonnage for its VLCC fleet and has ordered a double-hulled VLCC at Japan`s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). The contract, the value of which has not been disclosed, forms part of K Line`s plans to expand its tanker and bulker divisions.

The 300,000 dwt newbuilding will have an overall length of 333m, a beam of 60m and a depth of 29.3m. At maximum deadweight, draught will be 20.85m, allowing the vessel to safely transit the Malacca Strait.

The order is K Line`s first for a VLCC in nine years. Delivery of has been scheduled for mid-2001 when the vessel will join K Line`s existing fleet of four VLCCs.
