Niigata`s new engines
Japanese engine manufacturer Niigata has introduced an HLX medium-speed series in 22, 28 and 34cm bore sizes. Piston strokes are 300mm, 400mm, and 500mm respectively, giving engine speeds of 1,000/900 rev/min, 750/720 rev/min and 600 rev/min.
All the new HLX engines come in 18-, 16- and 12-cylinder vee configurations while the two smaller bores also have in-line six- and eight-cylinder options. Output from the new engines is 232kW/cyl (311 bhp), 375kW/cyl (502 bhp), and 555 kW/cyl 744 bhp) respectively with Pmax around 200bar and BMEP of 24.4bar. The engines consume HFO at the rate of around 193 g/kWh, which is injected under a pressure of almost 1,500 bar, giving a NO
x
figure of 10 g/kWh. Flame rings are included in the combustion chamber design, and reduce oil consumption to between 0.5 and 0.8 g/kWh.
