A P Møller has placed the first orders for MAN B&W`s 27/38 engine. This covers 32 gensets for eight container ships being built in Hyundai, and in Taiwan`s China Shipbuilding Corporation.

Hyundai will manufacture the four 8L27/38 units fitted in each of the four 4,300 TEU vessels it is building for Møller. MAN B&W Holeby will manufacture the two six-cylinder and two eight-cylinder units for each of the four 2,200 TEU Taiwanese vessels.

The company`s latest engine listing shows that the five-cylinder version of the 27/38 will not be built, and as predicted in The Motor Ship, November 1996, the 20/27 engine series has been dropped. It will be at least another two years before its equivalent in the new range, the 21/31, is introduced, says the company.

Also dropped are the five- and 18-cylinder options of the 32/40 and the 1,000 rev/min genset version of the 5L16/24 (the 1,200 rev/min unit remains available).
