Machinery risks analysed

French Classification Society, Bureau Veritas, has launched VeriStar Machinery, a risk-based classification system which covers main machinery, safety and pollution prevention items, plus other areas of ship`s equipment and facilities. It integrates with the ISM Code to demonstrate compliance for planned maintenance systems, says BV.

The risk analysis part of the system is used to evaluate the owner`s planned maintenance system. During the initial audit on board and subsequent annual audits, the system is assessed for implementation. The results of these audits and the risk analyses enable the planned maintenance system to be adjusted to minimise risk.

Risk analysis can be divided into two areas: probability and significance. Probability analysis examines the item`s failure behaviour statistically to determine possible ways it can fail, and assess the expected life failure frequency. Significance determines the consequences of failure of any item, its safety and for pullution prevention.
