Chamber changes for MAN B&W

Importer

On the cylinder cover side the fuel valves have been moved slightly towards the centre. These changes mean the maximum piston crown temperature drops from 509 degC to 421 degC and the average falls from 499 degC to 409 degC.

The new combustion chamber, including a piston cleaning ring, can be specified on new engines of 80cm bore and above. Smaller bore engines, which do not have piston cladding, will get the new combustion chamber when they undergo design updates.

Also under review is a multi-bore-cooled piston design that can also lower the crown temperature by the same margin, but results from initial trials have not been conclusive. These showed potential for coking in the small bore pipes. Further trials will be conducted.
