DNV plot safe operation

Importer

After inputting the load conditions and speed into the system, it can calculate the degree of roll and pitch in any given combination of wind and wave strength and direction. It can also generate a video animation showing the action of the vessel, along with the finite element analysis indicating stress levels in the hull.

By looking at wind/wave directions and loading conditions over a variety of sea states, the safe operating speed can be calculated and depicted as a graphic. This is particularly useful to masters of large fast vessels (such as container ships) as decreasing the speed from 14 to 10 knots halves the wave impact forces on the bow, calculated DNV.

DNV does not plan to run this calculation as a standard part of its newbuilding services and says this can be done for existing vessels at a cost of between $16,000 and $24,000.
