The units weigh around 1.8t and can be supplied with gearing for CODOG operation suitable for direct drive to waterjets or propellers for fast ferry operations. Allison has initially set hot section overhaul intervals at 12,000 hrs and says the 0.5t section can be changed in less than eight hours.

It is offering maintenance contracts to end users and expects the costs per kWh to be close to that for diesels.

In the 18MW range, Rolls Royce is offering the marinised version of the Spey, which weighs 17.5t and has fuel consumption figures of 220 g/kWh. The turbine is built in five sections and its 1.8t hot section can be changed in six hours, says the company.
