Norway reduces NOx

To date 24 vessels are participating in the Norway’s NOxRed scheme aimed at cutting NOx emissions from the coastal fleet. Five have been fitted with water emulsified fuel systems, with the same number being processed, and another two ships have been retrofitted with SCRs.

A further six ships have had engine rebuilds and modifications (low-NOx injectors, modified turbo-chargers and increased fuel pressure) cutting NOx by 30-35 per cent and fuel consumption by 5 per cent. Two vessels had modifications and adjustments to the timing, slightly increasing fuel consumption, and three have been re-engined.

One car ferry has had a Humid Air Motor system (The Motor Ship, December 1998) fitted to an auxiliary engine which is currently showing a 67 per cent decrease in NOx. Over ten years the Norwegian Government calculates these projects will cost 10kr ($1.26) for every kg of NOx saved.
