Waterproof VHF GMDSS radio

A fully waterproof VHF radio which floats and has a five-year user replaceable lithium battery has been developed by McMurdo and Pains-Wessex. Called the McMurdo R1 or Pains-Wessex SOS Rescue VHF radio, it has been designed to meet the new GMDSS legislation.

The Rl VHF has three channels – 6, 13 and the emergency channel 16. Channel 6 is quoted by GMDSS legislation as being used for communication between ship stations and aircraft stations engaged in co-ordinated search and rescue operations.

The PTT button is located on the side of the radio, and an on/off squelch button is also included.
