Cosco adopts global system

Cosco has adopted a Global Intelligence System (GNIS) which will enable its ship and shore staff to access worldwide information covering all aspects of safety and commercial efficiency. It will be installed on all of the company?s newbuild vessels, and retrofitting to the existing fleet has already started.

Development of the project, called The Navigator, was initiated by Cosco, The UK Hydrographic Office, and UKHO International Admiralty Chart Agent SCD Limited in 1997. The UKHO?s digital chart service ARCS has been used to provide a global basis for the navigation function forming the core of GNIS.

Official World Meteorological Organisation global weather information was supplied by the China Meteorological Office via Global Weather Routing Technology of Beijing and was overlaid on the ARCS charts last year. To support this, Electronic Navigation Systems have developed additional software functions with programming from Chersoft Ltd, and low maintenance modular hardware for the onboard systems.

Additional functions such as Arpa targets, position reporting via e-mail, extreme weather warnings, weather routing, tidal heights and streams, and ocean currents have already been integrated.
