Messaging costs reduced

Globe Wireless has introduced a The Globe Communications Centre that can send data files and e-mail messages to and from ships either by satellite or by a HF radio network. The system works out which transmission method is cheaper, although this can be overridden.

Messages over 3kb are usually sent via satellite while smaller files, around 85 per cent of all messages, are routed via the HF network. Once the message, from either route, is received on shore it is forwarded via the internet to its destination.

Ships automatically receive notification waiting satellite messages and delivery confirmation ? both are free. Users are presented with an individual bill for each ship which itemises all messages to and from the ship giving origin, destination transmission method and cost.

The company says that by using the package communication costs to and from ships can be almost halved.
