High-tech cranes

The multi-purpose Jurong Port – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jurong Town Corporation (JTC) ? can now offer alternative container handling services to the Port of Singapore Authority(PSA)?s four container terminals. Jurong Port?s motto “We?re smaller. We?re different”, describes its confidence. The port took delivery of the first of two 40t ship-to-shore quay cranes suitable for post-panamax container ships from Singapore?s Pan-United Shipyard in May 2001 and the yard is currently building a further three quay cranes for the port. The first crane, with a post panamax outreach of 47m, is scheduled for delivery in March 2002. The other two quay cranes, each with an outreach of 52m, are slated for delivery in the second quarter of 2002. Jurong Port has also ordered two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes. They are expected to be operational by the end of October this year. The four RTGs were delivered to Jurong Port in April this year by Singapore-based FELS cranes. It will deliver eight more RTGs in early 2002. In addition to the new cranes, the port?s container storage yard, along with its reefer container and dangerous cargo handling systems, is now fully operational. The port has also acquired a sophisticated terminal management system. Jurong Port handled 12 million tonnes of bulk and conventional cargoes and around 66,000 TEU of container throughput (via ships? cranes) in financial year 1999/2000. With the new container handling facilities, Jurong Port aspires to expand its container throughput to 200,000 TEU per year. n
