Vosper Thornycroft has placed an order with MAN B&W Diesel, Ruston for the supply of six 12RK270 main engines with gearboxes and ancillary equipment. The shipbuilder will install the machinery on three offshore patrol vessels it is building for the UK Royal Navy. Each vessel?s propulsion chain will consist of two engines, each producing 4,125kW at 1,000 rev/min, driving controllable pitch propellers through gearboxes. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in November 2002, with the others following at six-monthly intervals. They will patrol UK coastal waters, protecting fishing grounds and oil and gas installations.
