Carnival Spirit has first `smokeless` diesel

When Carnival Spirit emerges from Kvaerner Masa-Yards in late spring 2001it will be powered by the cruise industry`s first “smokeless” diesel engines, says W<#138>rtsil<#138>. At first only two of the ship`s six Wartsila 9L46D units will be modified with the new EnviroEngines technology. EnviroEngines use common rail fuel injection, giving high injection pressures at all engine speeds to ensure clean combustion with no visible smoke emissions. These modified engines represent the culmination of a year-long project between Carnival and Wartsila to develop a new “earth-friendly” power system.
