Hyundai releases high tech Himsen engine

Hyundai Heavy Industries, has launched its first own-designed new engine under the brand name of Himsen. The result of a ten-year $31m R&D programme, the first batch of the new compact class of medium-speed Himsen H21/32 diesel gensets was delivered in September. To date, demand for the new engine has reached around 30 units, all of which are destined for installation on newbuildings under construction at Hyundai?s own shipyard. In view of the fact that the orderbook for the Ulsan shipbuilding facilities stands at over 140 vessels, many more orders for gensets can be expected and will provide the core demand base for Hyundai?s own brand. Although current production is concentrating on the heavy fuel oil burning marine genset drives, the company will also offer propulsion and gas versions. The over-riding objective for developing the Himsen was a belief that gensets should be ?practical? and user friendly for customers and manufacturers. In other words, ease of maintenance and manufacturing.
