Scania has launched its most powerful marine engine ever. The new DI16M can deliver up to 590kW of power. It is a watercooled, twin turbocharged, direct injection V8 engine. It has a bore of 127mm, a stroke of 154mm and a displacement of about 16 litres. The engine design features new composite pistons with aluminium bodies and steel crowns. It also features a new full-flow heat exchanger, relocated below the exhaust manifold. With the timing gear also located at the rear of the engine, close to the flywheel, Scania says the front of the engine is clear to fit other engine driven accessories such as bilge pumps, AC compressors, power take offs and larger alternators. The new heat exchanger uses seawater to cool the engine coolant. The two intercoolers in the air inlet manifolds have a twin-type freshwater circuit. Oil is cleaned by a new combination of centrifuge and full flow paper element. The DI16M is the first Scania marine engine to use electronic injection and Scania?s S6 electronic management control system. In combination, these help improve power output, fuel economy and emission control, says Scania.
