Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has released further details on development of a 600mm bore UEC LSE engine (see The Motor Ship, December 2001). It says it expects to complete design work by this April, with a shop trial planned for the first half of 2003. The engine is targeted as a main propulsion unit for Aframax tankers, large LPG carriers (up to 80,000m3), feeder containerships (1,500-2,000 TEU), bulk carriers (100,000-110,000 dwt) and large vehicle carriers (about 4,000 car capacity).
