Hapag Lloyd orders largest electronically controlled engines

Hapag Lloyd has placed an order for three 12K98ME engines, the largest electrically controlled engines yet ordered. The MAN B&W design engines are for three 8,145 TEU containerships to be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, Korea.

The electronic control will ensure optimal fuel injection timing and rate, as well as exhaust valve timing and operation, exactly when and as desired, says MAN B&W. The ME engine features fully integrated control of all functions such as the governor, start and reversing, fuel, exhaust and starting valves, as well as cylinder oil feeding.

The first ME engine, on the chemical tanker M/T Bow Cecil, has now completed over 12,500 operational hours without experiencing any major problems according to MAN B&W.
