MAN B&W win engine orders for Chinese built boxships.

The MAN B&W Diesel Group has won orders for engines from the successful 48/60B and 58/64 medium-speed series for eleven new container vessels at three Chinese shipyards. The recently ordered diesel engines are intended for the propulsion of container feeders from the German shipping companies Werner Bockstiegel, Hermann Buss and Peter Doehle. To date, a total of 101 MAN B&W engines, with a capacity of approximately one million HP, manufactured at the Augsburg location, have been ordered from China of which 48 engines with a total capacity of 400 000 HP have been ordered during the course of this year alone. This gives the MAN B&W Diesel Group a dominant market share in medium-speed propulsion engines in China.

The latest order of 11 engines is destined for installation onboard feeder vessels of between 900 and 1,100 TEU size, a type of vessel where German shipyards have achieved worldwide success. Every large deep-sea container vessel, ranging from 4,000 to 8,000 TEU?s, requires between three and six feeder ships which will take on the further transport of containers into smaller ports.

MAN B&W will deliver the L48/60B type to Zhoushan shipyard which is building seven feeder ships for Hermann Buss shipping company in Leer. These eight-cylinder engines have a capacity of 9,600 kW (13 040 HP) at 500 rpm. The Jiangdong shipyard, in Wuhan, ordered three 7L58/64 engines with an output of 9,730 kW (13 320 HP) at 428 rpm for three feeders it is building for Werner Bockstiegel. A further two engines of this type, intended for the Peter Doehle shipping company, Hamburg, will be delivered to the Jinling shipyard, Nanjing.
