Greenpeace has avoided expulsion from the International Maritime Organisation.

In June this year, it lost the consultative status that it has held since 1991 after complaints by several member states that it engaged in ‘unsafe seamanship’.

The status was revoked, according to Greenpeace, without a vote while Singapore held the Council chair pending an official review by the full IMO Assembly in London from Nov 24-Dec 5.

Greenpeace claimed victory, saying it had ‘survived an attempt by flag of convenience states and other targets of Greenpeace actions to evict it from the UN organisation charged with ensuring ‘cleaner seas’ and ‘safer shipping’.’

Greenpeace said there were questions to be asked about the Singapore flag registry and the quality of the ships registered under it.
