Azipod propulsion for ice-breaking stand-by and supply vessel

ABB signed a contract with Kvaerner Masa-Yards to supply the Azipod propulsion system and the electric power plant for the Sakhalin icebreaker newbuilding project. The vessel has an overall length of 100 metres and a deadweight of 4,000 dwt and is scheduled to be delivered by the Helsinki shipyard in May 2005. ABB will supply two 6.5MW Azipod units, 3 main generators, the main switch board, ship transformers and the bow thruster motors. Designed on the DAS (Double Acting Ship) principle, the newbuilding will be able to break ice both ahead and astern and will have a DNV Icebreaker Ice 10 classification for both modes. The newbuilding will be operating in the harsh Okhotsk Sea environment in the Sakhalin area in far eastern Russia.
