Hyundai Heavy Industries? crankshaft gains top award
Korea?s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) selected Hyundai Heavy Industries? (HHI) crankshafts for large engines as the worlds number 1 product in the second half of 2003. Having first joined the ranks of crankshaft manufacturers in 1985, the company has made great strides in developing its technology introducing innovations, and currently boasts the No.2 position in the world with a 35% market share. At present, HHI is making about 200 crankshafts a year which is the highest annual production volume among engine manufacturers.
The quality of HHI?s crankshafts is demonstrated by the fact that there has been not a single defective item or complaint to date. Part of the reason for this is that the company uses the forging method instead of the casting technique as adopted by many other manufacturers. This produces a superior product in terms of durability and elasticity and contributes greatly to improvements in the performance of engines.
The company is increasing the number of crankshafts exported to Europe and China as well as Japan, which has been recognized as the leader in the manufacturing of crankshafts. HHI is confident that its market share will increase in the near future to make it the largest supplier in the world with. This confidence is based on the state-of-the-art production technology and the soon-to-come development of crankshafts suitable for 10,000 TEU-class container vessels and other very large vessels.
