Izar Gijon delivers Chilean chemical carrier

Chilean ship owner Ultragas has taken delivery of the latest addition to its fleet, the 22,700m3 chemical carrier Guanaco.

Built at Izar?s shipyard in Gijon, this 161.23m long double hulled vessel is fitted with 28 duplex stainless steel tanks constructed out of vertically corrugated bulkheads enabling the newbuilding to transport over 800 different IMO I and IMO II chemicals in addition to refined oil products. Five of the transverse bulkheads are sandwich type, consisting of two flat parallel bulkheads with an 800mm cofferdam space. These give the ship flexibility by making it possible to carry cargoes at different temperatures.

All tanks are designed for cargoes with densities up to 1.85t/m3 and the ship is fitted with 25 Framo submerged pumps with a capacity of 175m3/h together with three portable pumps of 300m3/h. Discharging can be accomplished by up to eight pumps simultaneously while tank cleaning can be accomplished by the 50 Scanjet tank washing machines. Cargoes are heated by means of double circuit coils inside each tank and dry saturated steam and the vessel is also fitted with a 350m3/h nitrogen generator for gas inerting.

Main engine is a MAN B&W 6S50 MC-C two-stroke diesel engine with an output of 9,480kW at 127 rev/min directly coupled to a Rolls Royce Kamewa controllable pitch propeller giving a service speed of 15.5 knots at 90 per cent mcr. The electricity generating plant consists of three medium speed MAN B&W 5L 23/30 diesel gensets each with an output of 655kW at 720 rev/min together with an emergency Caterpillar 3306 genset producing 190kW at 1,800 rev/min. All auxiliary engines and main engine were manufactured at Izar?s Manises diesel engine plant in Cartagena. Steering is by means of a full spade flap rudder from Rolls Royce. Rolls Royce also supplied the Kamewa 635kW cpp bow thruster.

The accommodation block located aft provides the 28 crew with high European standard living quarters comprising 24 single berth cabins each with its own modular washroom and two twin berth

cabins.

Izar has notched up an impressive track record in the construction of chemical carriers with its Gijon yard having built eight of this type with stainless steel tanks to date, including one for Botany Bay, two for Jo Tankers and four for Stolt Nielsen in addition to the Ultragas vessel. n
