Wagenborg acquires Chinese newbuilding

In November last year, the Dutch shipping company Wagenborg purchased a geared open hatch multi-purpose cargo vessel on the stocks from the Chinese shipbuilder Mawei Shipyard. The nearly completed 17,000 dwt newbuilding had been ordered some time ago by an unspecified European owner as hull number 436-2 and will be operated by Wagenborg under the name Prinsenborg.

Scheduled for delivery towards the end of March this year, the 142.5m long vessel is ice-strengthened and will be operated on the liner service between Scandinavia and the Atlantic coast of North America. Fitted with three deck cranes of 35t lifting capacity, Prinsenborg is classed by LR with notation that it is strengthened for regular discharge by heavy grabs with maximum loaded weight of 25t. The three holds have a total carrying capacity of 653,605ft3, while some 276 teu boxes can be accommodated on deck and a further 382 containers below deck give the ship flexibility for handling a wide range of cargoes.

A single controllable pitch propeller is driven by a 7,560kW MAN B&W 7S42MC main diesel engine giving a service speed of 15.5 kts. In addition to the main propulsor, a 1,000kW bowthruster is installed. Auxiliary engines consist of three 680kW gensets which are supplemented by a 1,600kW shaft generator.

The acquisition of Prinsenborg keeps with the Dutch owner?s policy of securing versatile general cargo vessels at a keen price and with a relatively early delivery.
