MOL excels in sustainability and safety

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd (MOL) has been selected as one of Japan?s leading companies in environmental management. The company was chosen as one of the “Green Top Runner 68” companies in 2003 by the Sustainability Management Rating Institute, an affiliate of Sustainable Management Forum. “Green Top Runner” companies are those that have developed and implemented advanced environmental management systems that exemplify Japan?s commitment to protecting the environment and fostering sustainable development. Sustainability management ratings focus on three categories ? soundness of management (corporate philosophy, corporate governance, risk management, information disclosure, etc.), corporate citizenship (corporate culture, Occupational safety and health, consideration for consumers, equal opportunity, etc.), and approaches to environmental protection. They are one of the indices of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Japan.

Also, for the tenth consecutive year, MOL President Kunio Suzuki announced the start of a company-wide inspection to ensure safe vessel operation and cargo handling. The inspection program reflects ongoing advances in safety-related know-how and technology. Based on MOL?s vessel safety operation and environmental protection policies, the company is working to maintain and improve its transport service quality. The safety inspection focuses on pinpointing and addressing real-world problems. This year?s safety inspections are slated for 1 March to 15 April and focus on several areas including: Monitoring the progress of environmental activities aboard MOL-operated vessels, based on ISO14001; Implementation of a structure to monitor visitors and prevent stowaways and piracy, based on the ISPS Code taking effect in July 2004; Inspecting the safety of facilities and operation and maintenance of mooring equipment including anchors and deck-related devices; And checking sensor systems and so on to ensure proper cargo handling. Following the inspections MOL marine inspectors will also contact affiliated shipowners and ship management companies to discuss safety issues and ensure compliance with MOL safety standards.
