Samsung and IHI sign technology cooperation

Samsung Heavy Industries signed a technology cooperation agreement on LNG containment tanks with IHI in Japan. Samsung said that it will apply the new technology on LNG storage system to offshore ships such as LNG-FPSO and LNG-FSRU which the shipbuilder will develop in future. The Korean shipbuilder further said that the cooperation will sharply improve the structural safety of LNG cargo tank.

The new cargo tank, which will be jointly manufactured with IHI, is of the SPB (Self-supporting prismatic-shape IMO Type B) and is claimed to have superior safety characteristics and be more cost effective. In addition, SPB has the flexibility to cope with the increase in LNG ship size.
