Korean newbuilding round-up

STX Shipbuilding recently delivered its first ever LPG carrier. Ordered by Qatar Shipping, the 23,000cbm newbuilding, named Almarona, has a length of 164.80m, a width of 26.20m and a depth of 15.30m.

The Jinhae-based shipbuilder also clinched two 3,500TEU containerships from Reederei NORD Klaus E. Oldendorff in Germany. Total contract price is $94million and the vessels will be 246.80m long, 32.20m wide, a 19.30m depth and a speed of 23.4 knots.

Hyundai Merchant Marine ordered another three 6,800TEU container ships from Hyundai Heavy Industries at the price of $250.4million with delivery between July to December 2007. Last year the shipowner ordered five 6,800TEU boxships from HHI with deliveries from May to November, 2006.

Samsung Heavy Industries won an order for two 150,000cbm LNG carriers from NYK Line at the value of $340million with deliveries in June and August 2007. This is the first time the Japanese shipping company ordered LNG carriers from Samsung.

The 21 C Shipbuilding secured sixteen 13,000DWT chemical tankers including options from PD Gram in Norway, Nicholas G. Moundreas and Peroseas in Greece. The shipbuilder also clinched a 6,500DWT steel carrier from Shinsung Shipping.
