More than half of Philippines? ports ISPS compliant

At least 60% of ports in the Philippines currently handling various international vessels have properly complied with the international ship and port facility security (ISPS) code which was enforced beginning last July 1.

According to Sheryl Santos, policy officer of the Department of Trade and Industry?s Export Development Council (EDC), 72 out of the country?s 120 ports have already established their security plans, a primary requirement for the ISPS compliance. She also said that 89% of vessels engaged in international voyage are now ISPS compliant.

Santos said the export industry practically depends on the ISPS compliance as the country?s exports mainly rely on shipping and expects that all ports and ships will be ISPS compliant over the next few months. She said among those that have been declared ISPS compliant are major ports in Mindanao, including Makar in this city.
