MOL launches state of the art car carrier

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan has launched the 60,200 gt car carrier Utopia Ace, the first of 12 carriers that will be delivered to MOL by March 2007. The Utopia Ace features advanced technologies such as a double-hulled fuel tank that reduces the risk of oil spills and a hull design that significantly reduces wind resistance ? the same technology used in the Courageous Ace, which was named the Ship of the Year for 2003.

MOL continues to develop and promote new technologies, focusing on energy saving and environmental consciousness in the future.

The 200 metre long Utopia Ace will have a car carrying capacity of 6,400 units and a speed of 20.6 kts.

New features include a hyper-slim energy-saving hull design that reduces resistance by 8% compared to a conventionally designed vessel. The ship has an aerodynamically rounded design not only at the bow but also on the sides to further reduce wind resistance. Additionally, the ventilation covers on the shipside decks feature aerodynamically rounded sides. MOL has applied for a patent on this revolutionary design. These energy saving features will reduce the ship?s CO2 emissions by about 14%, compared to current vessels.

The Utopia Ace has a double-hulled fuel tank to reduce the risk of spills in case of a grounding or collision. MOL and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have applied for a patent on this new environment friendly technology.

By changing to spray oil injection, the Utopia Ace will use less lubricating oil in the main engine cylinders, reducing the engine?s particulate emissions by about 30%.

To boost operational efficiency, the Utopia Ace is equipped with a mobile ramp way connected directly to the upper deck. Moreover, all car decks can accommodate tall vehicles including SUVs.

In addition, mooring equipment is placed in the optimized position and anchors and other equipment are positioned asymmetrically, helping to increase cargo capacity.
