Turbomeca, part of snecma group, has developed the TM 1800, a gas turbine genset, which is designed for sea propulsion and electricity generation, railways applications, combined heat and power (CHP), emergency power units and the oil-producing industry. The French gas turbine manufacturer believes the TM 1800 will be able to rival diesel engines, both in terms of purchase and operational costs.

The TM 1800 turbo-genset, whose naval version for on-board electricity generation and cruising propulsion has been developed since December 2000, is claimed to combine the advantages of diesel engines and gas turbines, in particular in terms of consumption, reliability, and maintenance costs. It has a power output of 2MW, a consumption of 210g/kWh and boasts a range of innovative characteristics, such as a high-speed alternator and a heat recuperator. Other features are its reduced size, the fact that it is vibration free, as well as highly reliable.
