India?s indigenous carrier on the way
The Indian Navy has started construction of a 40,000 tonne displacement indigenous aircraft carrier at an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore.
“Besides acquiring the ‘Gorshkov’ aircraft carrier from Russia, the Indian navy has also started construction — at its Cochin Shipyard — of a totally indigenous aircraft carrier with a capacity of 25 aircraft,” Admiral Arun Prakash said to the press after the 69th passing out parade at the Naval Academy in Panaji. “The government has sanctioned Rs 3,000 crore so far,” he said.
