Russia to improve Libyan shipyards

Russian shipbuilding experts are willing to offer Libya assistance in creating greater capacities at existing shipbuilding and ship-repairing yards. The Central Research Institute of Shipbuilding Technology in Russia plans to set up a project to build a shipbuilding yard with a design capacity of 25-50 fishing vessels per year.

The Russian delegation, including 15 representatives of some of Russia’s major shipbuilding and design companies and research institutes, will discuss these and other related projects during its forthcoming visit to Libya. They will present their products and services and hold discussions. The proposed yard could reach its design capacity five years after the start of the construction and three years after the launch. Construction costs are estimated at $70 million.

Presidential advisor Vladimir Shipilo said the development of the tanker fleet seemed to be the most promising area of cooperation between the two countries because Libya is an oil producer. Other areas of cooperation could include the construction of dry-cargo ships, chemical carriers, fishing equipment and boats.
