Will Aker take over Gdansk shipyard?

The future of the birthplace of Solidarity, the Gdansk Shipyard of the Grupa Stocznia Gdynia (SG GSG) continues to remain unsure. The state plans to merge it with several other shipyards and create an industrial group but is also considering inviting a private investor. “I hope to receive a letter of intent from one of large European shipyard groups interested in capital engagement in SG,” said Arkadiusz Krezel, the president of the Industrial Development Agency (ARP).

Although the name of the potential investor was not revealed, industry analysts claim that it might be Norway’s Aker Yards. “The representatives of Aker visited the shipyard several times. We are not discrediting any of the investors. We are afraid though that Aker is not planning on building ships here. Norway is not in the EU. It has its own aid system for the sector,” commented Roman Galezewski, the head of the SG GSG Solidarity.
