Vietnam starts container production plant

The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) recently started its construction of a container production plant in Lai Vu commune, Kim Thanh district, Northern Province of Hai Duong. The plant, the first of its kind to be built in Vietnam, has a capacity of 30,000 TEU per year to meet the increasing demand from both local and international fleets operating in Vietnam.

According to the Vinashin container company’s director Dao Van Binh, the local demand for containers is likely to increase to around 100,000-135,000 TEU by 2010. The plant will be built, at an estimated cost of over $22 million, jointly by Vinashin container company and its Taiwanese partner, Toong Goen. Scheduled to be put into operation in late 2006, the plant will not only help reduce transport costs for local businesses but also generate about 1,000 jobs for the province.
