GSL embarks on modernisation drive
Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) here has embarked on a modernisation drive to augment its infrastructure facilities to manufacture state-of-the-art vessels with competitive prices and shorter delivery schedules. A GSL source said it had appointed consultant Haskoning Nederland B.N. of the Netherlands to prepare a master plan for the modernisation project.
GSL has also diversified its activities to manufacture training simulators for Navy and ONGC besides working on a project for setting up a fire fighting training unit for the Navy with simulation facilities, considered the first of its kind in Asia.
The shipyard is constructing two advanced offshore patrol vessels and four extra fast patrol vessels (XFPVs). Three of the XFPVs are likely to be delivered in the financial year 2005-06. It has also received orders for constructing three 90-metre offshore patrol vessels for the Coast Guard and three 105-metre vessels for the Indian Navy.
