Hyundai breaks world record

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) marked a world record of 890,000 bhp for large size marine engines for one month by completing a test run of the final marine engine on the 27th of December. It is the biggest production since it manufactured its first engine in 1979.

HHI had previously set a world record with a total monthly production of 760,000 bhp in June and the new record represents an increase in production capacity of 17% in a matter of six months. This increase in output is due to the extension of production facilities and installation of new machinery and equipment. The company also produced, in December, the world?s largest marine engine at 101,640 bhp. This is scheduled to be installed in a 9,400TEU containership ordered by a Greek owner.

Last year, HHI built 177 two-stroke marine engines giving it a leading share of 35% of the global market and plans to expand its production capacity to 8.39 million bhp next year.
